TRICK OR TREAT? FROM TRADITION TO SAFETY

Halloween, the scariest holiday of the year, has deep roots in history. This celebration does not have its origins in the United States as many people think, but rather in Europe, more specifically in Scotland! Halloween would take its origin from the ancient festival of Samhain, a kind of Celtic New Year’s Day that separated the summer period from the winter period. The festival of Samhain lasted an entire week during which, according to the beliefs of the time, the world of the living and the world of the dead overlapped. When the Romans conquered the Celtic lands, they slowly eliminated all pagan festivals, which were considered to be the work of the devil, and by the time All Saints’ Day was officially established, the peoples who continued to celebrate the ancient Samhain moved the holiday to October 31.

As time passed, Halloween evolved to become a holiday in which children, dressed in scary masks, knock on doors asking for “Trick or Treat,” hoping to fill their bags with candies. This custom also seems to be traced back to the Celtic period of Halloween, when during the night of Samhain people would leave food on the table as a tribute to the deads, this was to prevent the dead, together with fairies and elves, from doing all kinds of mischief to people.

But what happens to that candy when it inadvertently falls to the floor? Many parents have questioned whether it is safe to eat the candies that children receive, perhaps unwrapped, and accidentally end up on the floor during the evening. This is where the famous “5-second rule” comes in.

TREATS AND THE 5-SECOND RULE: TRUTH OR MYTH?

The 5-second rule is a popular idea that claims that if a food falls to the ground and is picked up within 5 seconds, it remains safe to eat. But how valid is this theory? Several scientific studies have tried to test it, and the answer is more complex than you might think.

According to research from Rutgers University, there is no universal rule that guarantees the safety of dropped food. Bacteria, in fact, can contaminate food in less than a second, and the amount of bacteria transferred depends on various factors, including the surface the food fell on and the type of food. For example, a piece of chocolate might be less susceptible to contamination than a piece of bread because of its smoother, less porous surface.

Another study conducted by a team of microbiologists at the University of Aston examined the actual rate at which bacteria can contaminate different foods and showed that although exposure time influences, it does not guarantee that food will remain bacteria-free. In addition, surfaces such as a kitchen or bathroom floor can be more dangerous than a carpet, as they have a higher concentration of microorganisms.

THE SOLUTION? ECO SILVER PAPER®!

To reduce the risks associated with contamination, especially during holiday periods such as Halloween, it is essential to take additional safety measures. One innovative solution is Eco Silver Paper®, treated with stabilized silver ions. This special paper, developed for food packaging and storage, offers natural antibacterial protection.

Silver is known for its all-natural antimicrobial properties. The silver particles in Eco Silver Paper act as a barrier against the growth of bacteria, keeping food safer and decontaminated for a longer period of time. This makes it ideal for use during Halloween, when sweets are most at risk of falling off and coming into contact with potentially contaminated surfaces.

In addition, Eco Silver Paper is environmentally friendly and biodegradable, meeting the growing need for sustainable solutions. In a world that is increasingly focused on reducing its environmental impact, choosing materials such as Eco Silver Paper allows you to combine food protection with respect for the environment.

A SAFER AND MORE CONSCIOUS HALLOWEEN

As we respect the tradition of “trick or treat,” we can also be conscious of the safety measures to be taken, to protect the health of the youngest children and at the same time contribute to a more green world. This year, let it be a fun and safe Halloween, with a touch of innovation thanks to Eco Silver Paper®.
